How Much Does a Bathroom Renovation Cost in the Netherlands?

Quick answer

A full bathroom renovation in the Netherlands typically costs €5,000–€15,000+, depending on size, tile area, and the quality of sanitaryware. Labour for tiling, waterproofing, and fitting usually makes up a large share. A typical apartment bathroom takes 1–2 weeks.

Bathrooms are labour-intensive, which is why they cost more per square metre than almost any other room. In the Netherlands a full bathroom renovation typically runs from €5,000 for a compact, simple bathroom to €15,000 and beyond for larger or higher-spec rooms.

Where the money goes

Materials — tiles, shower, sanitaryware, tap fittings — are part of it, but labour for stripping out, waterproofing, tiling, and fitting is usually the larger share. Tiling in particular is skilled, slow work, and the bigger the tiled area the higher the cost.

What changes the price

A walk-in shower versus a bath, full-height tiling versus part-tiling, mosaic versus large-format tiles, and moving the toilet or drainage all move the number significantly. Underlying repairs — rotten substrate or poor existing waterproofing — can add cost once the old bathroom comes out.

Don't cut the waterproofing

The one place never to economise is tanking (waterproofing) the wet zones before tiling. It's invisible and tempting to skip, but it's the most common cause of bathrooms failing within a few years. A proper quote includes it as standard.

Frequently asked

A typical apartment bathroom takes one to two weeks. Larger rooms or full mosaic tiling sit at the longer end.
